New York's premier actor-musician theatre company takes a break from creating their own original brand of musical theatre to have round-table discussions on the most memorable movie musicals. Our movie musical podcast is fun, fresh, and lively, featuring tons of acclaimed guests and artists!
Background
We were approached in late 2019 by two movie musical producers from The Barn, an LA-based indie film organization that was interested in making original movie musicals. We jumped at the opportunity to make something fresh and fun for the big screen, then immediately realized how very little we knew about making a movie.
Cut to: six months later and we’re all in quarantine, with a lot of time on our hands. We decided the time was right to launch the Thicket and Thistle movie musical podcast!
Movie Musicals
We knew that we wanted to tackle movie musicals from a variety of genres and time periods, from the uber-famous (Singin’ In the Rain) to the unique and obscure (London Road). So all there was to do was make a HUGE spreadsheet of movie musicals and dive into watching them all!
But we weren’t the only ones yearning for theater and music in 2020. As the show progressed, we invited special guests to join us in watching musicals and giving us a taste of what lay behind-the-scenes. For example, Stephen Trask regaled us with the wild stories from the making of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Ashley Brooke Monroe broke down the multifaceted masterpiece that is Hamilton.
The Thistlies
For the end of Season 1, we envisioned a lavish, low-budget awards show called the Thistlies, where winners received Golden Buckets and the most prestigious category of the evening was “Best Supporting Actress”.
This might be our best episode yet, and for new listeners, it features some clips from discussions we had from earlier episodes that you may be interested in checking out.
